If you’re planning a trip to Playa Guiones, one of Nosara’s most popular spots, knowing how to get there smoothly can make a big difference. This guide covers the best ways to reach Nosara, including flights, roads, and local transport options. You’ll also learn why you don’t always need a car if you stay near Playa Guiones.

Flying to Nosara


Nosara Airport (NOB)


The closest airport to Nosara is Nosara Airport (NOB), a small domestic airport located about 10 minutes from Playa Guiones. It mainly serves regional flights from San José and Liberia. Flying into Nosara Airport is the fastest way to get to Playa Guiones, especially if you want to avoid long drives on rough roads.


Several local airlines operate multiple daily flights to Nosara:


  • Sansa Airlines offers flights from San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and Liberia International Airport (LIR).

  • Green Airways also provides regional flights, though schedules can vary seasonally.


Flights to Nosara typically take about 30 to 40 minutes from San José and cost around $100-$120 one way. Booking early is recommended, especially during high season, as planes are small and seats fill quickly.


Liberia and San José Airports


If you prefer international flights or cannot find a direct flight to Nosara, Liberia (LIR) and San José (SJO) are your best options. Both airports are well connected to the US, Canada, and other countries.


  • From Liberia Airport: Nosara is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive south. The road is mostly paved but includes some rough patches as you approach Nosara.

  • From San José Airport: The drive to Nosara takes about 4.5 to 5 hours without traffic. Traffic in San Jose is usually heavy so account for that. The route includes paved highways and some unpaved sections near Nosara.


Renting a car at either airport is common for travelers who want flexibility. However, a car is not always necessary depending on your preferences and hotel location.


Roads and Driving to Nosara


Road Conditions


The main road to Nosara has improved significantly over the years. The last stretch from Nicoya to Nosara is mostly paved, but some parts remain gravel or dirt. The road can get muddy and bumpy after heavy rains. Despite that a 4x4 vehicle is not mandatory as the road is flat.

Local Bus

Getting Around Nosara and Playa Guiones


Walking and Biking


If you stay near Playa Guiones, you don’t always need a car. The town is compact, and many hotels, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance. Renting a bike is another popular way to get around. The flat terrain and scenic streets make biking enjoyable and practical.


Golf Carts and ATV and Scooters


ATV and Scooters are very common mode of transportation. But require a valid license and caution on uneven roads. Golf carts are also available. Many places offer golf cart rentals, which are perfect for short trips around town and to nearby beaches.


Tuk- Tuk in Town


Tuk-tuks operate within Nosara and can take you pretty much everywhere They are affordable and easy to find. You can always ask at the reception for contact number of a reputable tuk-tuk driver.


Why You Don’t Always Need a Car if Staying Near Playa Guiones


Playa Guiones is the heart of Nosara’s surf and tourist scene. Staying here means you can access most amenities without driving:


  • Restaurants, cafes, and shops are clustered near the beach.

  • Surf schools and rental shops are within walking distance.

  • Yoga studios and wellness centers are nearby.

  • The beach itself is easily accessible on foot.
